stretch marks (striae)

Stretch marks, also known as striae, are a common skin condition that can affect anyone at any age, but is especially common in women during and after pregnancy. At Esthetics by Emi, we understand the causes of stretch marks and how to help you control or even eliminate them.

Stretch marks often appear as purple or red streaks on the skin's surface; they may be raised or sunken. They typically start out as flat lines that eventually become thicker and more pronounced. These lines typically form because of rapid stretching of the skin due to sudden weight gain or growth spurts. Over time, the streaks usually fade from bright red/purple to white/silver. Pregnant women are particularly prone to developing stretch marks, as their skin stretches to accommodate a growing baby.

The most common areas where stretch marks form are the abdomen, breasts, buttocks, and thighs. In addition to pregnancy, other causes of stretch marks include: rapid weight gain or loss; hormonal changes (such as those related to puberty); certain medications like corticosteroids; conditions such as Cushing's syndrome; heredity; and excessive sun exposure.

Esthetics by Emi offers various treatments for stretch marks that can help reduce their appearance. Laser therapy is a popular option for treating stretch marks. This method uses laser energy which penetrates deep into the skin layers to stimulate collagen production and improve elasticity of the areas affected by stretchmarks, and works to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and improve the overall texture and tone of your skin.
